Nam Kee to Open Third Restaurant

July 2010

Press release

Amsterdam, July 1, 2010

Nam Kee to Open Third Restaurant

Amsterdam - Nam Kee will open the doors of their third restaurant in Amsterdam soon.

Nam Kee De Pijp

Some 30 years after the opening of their first restaurant on the Zeedijk, and nearly 20 years after the opening of their second restaurant on the Geldersekade, Nam Kee will soon open its third restaurant in Amsterdam. The new restaurant will be located on the Marie Heinekenplein in De Pijp area in Amsterdam. With the announcement of the third Nam Kee restaurant, the three restaurants will in future be referred to as follows:

  • Nam Kee Chinatown - Zeedijk 111 - 113
  • Nam Kee Nieuwmarkt - Geldersekade 117
  • Nam Kee De Pijp - Marie Heinekenplein 4

  • Nam Kee De Pijp will be decorated in the same style as the recently renovated Nam Kee Chinatown (please also see our press release of May 7, 2010, on www.namkee.net/news/?language=EN). The interior will again feature stone-and woodwork, as well as Chinese calligraphic paintings. These elements combined, bring to life the well-known Nam Kee character of authenticity and simplicity. Nam Kee De Pijp is expected to open its doors by the end of this summer.

    Nam Kee Restaurants

Nam Kee opened its doors in 1981 on the Zeedijk in the heart of Amsterdam, followed by a second restaurant on the Geldersekade in Amsterdam (opposite the Waag on the Nieuwmarkt) in 1992. Two generations of the Chan family have maintained the quality of the authentic Cantonese cuisine and recipes, prepared fresh in both restaurants for almost 30 years. The famous Oysters of Nam Kee and well-known grill products, such as Peking Duck and Tja Siew are still prepared in the kitchen according to traditional recipes. Over the years, Nam Kee has become an established name in the greater Amsterdam area. In the year 2000, Nam Kee was introduced to an even larger audience upon the release of the novel entitled "De oesters van Nam Kee" (The oysters of Nam Kee) by Kees van Beijnum. Furthermore, Nam Kee gained national fame in 2002 upon the movie adaptation of the novel, which played in all major national cinemas. On an international level, the above has not gone unnoticed. Nam Kee is still considered the best and most well-known Chinese restaurant in the Netherlands by leading independent international guides such as Lonely Planet and Time Out. In 2009, Time Out Amsterdam awarded Nam Kee ‘Best Chinese Restaurant in Amsterdam.’

A Fresh Face For Nam Kee Zeedijk

    May 2010

    Press release

    Amsterdam, May 7, 2010

A Fresh Face for Nam Kee Zeedijk

In April 2010, well-known Chinese restaurant, Nam Kee on the Zeedijk in Amsterdam, has received a major face-lift. 30 years after the opening of this popular spot, a beautiful new interior has been unveiled, adding a touch of oriental class to the initial concept, whilst keeping true to the origins and history of Nam Kee.

The new interior features stone and woodwork, as found in many traditional Chinese interiors. Chinese calligraphic paintings hang from the walls and further compliment the new design. The original white tiles once covering the walls, from floor to ceiling, have not completely vanished, however, they are now found in a slightly different form, offering a nice little nod to the past.

The new-look Nam Kee exudes authenticity and simplicity with a fresh new interior offering a warm and intimate atmosphere. The loss of the old white tiles has made way for a new interior that, however different from before, has retained that well-known Nam Kee character and charm.
